A product of a series of experiments in pattern drafting in 2018 whilst trying to redesign my business cards and broader professional identity. This hexagonal cell pattern works well as either a bordering or surface-filling element. Upon trying out different applications, I found its geometric conundrum most enjoyable as a graphic focal point rather than mere background or margin dressing. This way the work is about the expressiveness of the pure ornate form, with the imagery bound within (the gradient and photography in rightmost elements) instead taking a supplemental position.
The animated element is from a WebGL program pairing this linked circles pattern, an extremely artificial form, with 360° photography of a natural environment to determine how suitably lighting conditions can be simulated so that the images convincingly share the same space and perspective.
